Debra & Kaveera
When Debra’s daughter Kaveera started nursery, there wasn’t as much support available due to the COVID pandemic.

“I noticed that Kaveera’s language and communication wasn’t coming on and wanted to do something to help. When I saw an advert for Let’s Talk with Under 5s on her school’s website, I thought it could be really good for her.”
Let’s Talk with Under 5s is a free, accredited speech and language course for parents and caregivers with children aged 2½ -4 years old.
During the course, parents come together to learn how to support their child’s speech and language development.
“Dave who ran the sessions was very knowledgeable. I found them very interesting and informative.
“I think that a lot of parents don’t know exactly how a child learns to communicate. There’s a lot more to it than we actually think there is, and I didn’t fully understand that until I did Let’s Talk with Under 5s.
“Along with the sessions, we were given homework to go home and try which we then fed back on together as a group. I thought that was really brilliant. It was reassuring to know that there are others out there who are going through the same things as you – who want help, are a little bit anxious and might be a bit confused as to why their child’s not talking. We got a lot of tips from each other.
"I’m really happy to have had the opportunity to learn how to help my child. I’ve gained a lot of knowledge and skills and I’ve seen a big, big change in Kaveera since I’ve done the course. She’s forming more sounds; She’s more interested in speaking because of the tips that I’m now using at home; She’s coming on at school quite a lot as well. I feel much more positive now."
